1999 Mercedes-Benz G500 Short Wheelbase Europa Import Restoration

1999 Mercedes-Benz G500 Short Wheelbase Europa Import Restoration

Some vehicles are more than transportation — they’re love stories. This 1999 Mercedes-Benz G500 Short Wheelbase hardtop, originally imported by Europa, is exactly that. Rare, analog, and deeply mechanical, this is one of those G-Wagens you simply don’t see every day.

With 150,000 miles and over 25 years of history, this truck has lived a full life. But thanks to a thoughtful restoration and subtle modernization, it now looks, drives, and feels better than ever.

A Rare Europa Import Worth Preserving

Short wheelbase G-Wagens are already scarce, but Europa-imported G500 hardtops are especially rare in the U.S. We don’t see many of these come through the shop, and when they do, they deserve the right approach — not over-the-top modification, but careful refinement.

Earlier this year, this truck was completely stripped down to the bare shell in preparation for paint. Every piece of glass, trim, and hardware was removed, exposing the reality of 25-year-old paint that had seen its share of road debris and wear. That process allowed us to correct imperfections properly and start fresh.

Today, the result speaks for itself.

Exterior Updates That Respect the Original Design

Rather than chase trends, this G500 received period-correct upgrades that enhance both function and appearance:

  • Projector LED headlights for improved visibility while maintaining a factory look

  • Updated G550-style grille with blacked-out inserts

  • OEM 2016–2018 G550 front bumper, chosen for its cleaner proportions compared to the G63 bumper

  • Powder-coated black front bull bar and custom side steps

  • Modernized mirrors with integrated turn signals and puddle lights

  • Blacked-out spare tire carrier ring for a cleaner rear profile

All chrome was removed except for the original badging, preserving the character while sharpening the overall presentation.

Why the Short Wheelbase G500 Is So Special

The short wheelbase chassis completely changes the driving experience. Compared to long wheelbase models, this G500 is:

  • More nimble around town

  • Easier to park and maneuver

  • Lighter and more responsive

  • Exceptionally engaging as a daily driver

Powered by a naturally aspirated V8 producing 300 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque, the shorter and lighter platform makes this truck feel genuinely quick — even by modern standards.

With updated brakes and refreshed mechanical systems, it drives like a modern vehicle while still delivering that unmistakable old-school G-Wagen feel.

Modern Comforts Without Losing the Analog Feel

While the truck retains its classic character, we’ve made smart updates where it matters:

  • Brand-new front windshield

  • UV-protective tint on all glass, including the windshield

  • Protection for interior materials from UV damage

  • Reduced cabin heat — especially important at higher elevations

These subtle changes make the truck far more comfortable to live with while protecting the investment long-term.

Market Value and Why These Are Appreciating

We’re frequently asked about the value of short wheelbase G500 Europa imports, and the reality is clear: they’re climbing.

As of late 2025:

  • Unrestored examples typically trade in the $80,000–$100,000 range

  • Light restorations like this one fall into the mid to high $100,000s

  • Fully restored examples can exceed $200,000, sometimes approaching a quarter million

With limited production, increasing collector interest, and the 25-year import rule bringing more attention to these trucks, values are expected to continue rising.

A Platform Worth Protecting

This G500 remains mechanically original — engine, transmission, axles, and drivetrain — all carefully serviced and documented. The restoration focused on preserving authenticity while enhancing reliability, drivability, and longevity.

It’s fast, nimble, daily-driver usable, and increasingly collectible — a rare combination.
