EMC Wolf AMG Swap: Building the Ultimate V8-Powered G-Wagen

EMC Wolf AMG Swap: Turning a Slow Diesel Wolf Into a 400HP Monster

Some projects start with a simple question:

“How do we make this thing better?”

That’s exactly what happened with this EMC Wolf build at Alliance Auto Care.

The original Expedition Motor Company Wolf was cool — undeniably cool — but there was one major problem:

It was painfully slow.

Factory power came from a naturally aspirated five-cylinder diesel producing roughly:

  • 60 horsepower
  • Extremely low gearing
  • Barely highway-capable performance

So Alliance Auto Care decided to completely change the formula.

The answer?

A full M113 AMG V8 swap.

And the results are absolutely wild.

First Drive After the Build

This video captures the truck’s maiden voyage after:

  • Engine swap
  • Axle swap
  • Transmission integration
  • Full drivetrain redesign

The entire shop crew gathered outside because nobody quite believed the truck was finally ready to move under its own power.

And once it started rolling?

Everything worked.

  • Steering
  • Brakes
  • Transmission
  • Power delivery

For a completely custom drivetrain conversion, that’s a massive achievement.

The Original Problem: The Wolf Was Too Slow

The EMC Wolf originally used:

  • A five-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel
  • Extremely low factory gearing
  • Minimal horsepower

While charming and rugged, it struggled badly with:

  • Highway speeds
  • Acceleration
  • Modern drivability expectations

The team wanted to preserve:

  • The rugged Wolf aesthetic
  • The analog feel
  • The off-road capability

But dramatically improve performance.

Enter the M113 AMG V8

Alliance Auto Care installed:

  • Mercedes M113 AMG 5.5L V8
  • Sourced from a C55 AMG
  • High-compression naturally aspirated configuration

The result:

  • Nearly 400 horsepower
  • Massive torque increase
  • Dramatically improved drivability
  • True highway capability

This completely transforms the personality of the truck.

Instead of struggling to maintain speed, the Wolf now cruises effortlessly.

The First Attempt Broke the Rear Axle

Originally, the team tried running the AMG drivetrain with the Wolf’s original rear-drive setup.

That lasted… briefly.

The factory rear axle immediately failed under the added power.

So Alliance Auto Care escalated the build significantly.

463 Axles & Transfer Case Conversion

To solve the drivetrain issues, the truck received:

  • Full 463 axle swap
  • 463 transfer case
  • Full-time all-wheel drive conversion
  • Rear disc brakes
  • Updated gearing

Benefits included:

  • Stronger axles
  • Better drivability
  • Improved braking
  • Better highway RPM
  • More balanced power delivery

The gearing change alone was huge.

Previously, the truck would sit around:

  • 3,200 RPM at 60 mph

Now it cruises comfortably at dramatically lower RPM.

Standalone ECU & Transmission Control

One of the most complex parts of the build was electronics integration.

The truck now runs:

  • Haltech Nexus R3 standalone ECU
  • Standalone transmission controller
  • Real-time transmission monitoring

This setup allows:

  • Full tuning control
  • Shift point adjustments
  • Custom fueling maps
  • Reliable engine management

The truck is still in the fine-tuning phase, but the hard part is complete:
It runs, drives, shifts, and functions properly.

Interior Upgrades

The build also modernizes the interior while preserving the Wolf character.

Upgrades include:

  • Push-button start
  • Recovered dash
  • Matching upholstery plans
  • Modified center console
  • Transmission display integration
  • Touchscreen controls

The center floor section also required custom fabrication because of:

  • The 463 transfer case conversion
  • Drivetrain packaging differences

Everything is being refined to look factory-correct despite the radical mechanical changes underneath.

Three-Row Family Setup

Originally, the rear seating configuration used bucket seats.

But because the owner needed more practicality, Alliance Auto Care added:

  • Three-row rear bench seating

Now the truck can comfortably carry:

  • Multiple children
  • Gear
  • Family passengers
  • Overland equipment

It’s a great example of balancing functionality with performance.

Hidden Audio System

Even the audio system received custom fabrication.

The truck features:

  • Custom-built hidden subwoofer enclosure
  • Ported enclosure design
  • Integrated backup camera
  • Discreet mounting solutions

The goal was keeping the interior clean while dramatically improving sound quality.

Because yes — if you’re driving a V8-swapped Wolf, you need proper music.

The Driving Experience Is Completely Different

According to Joe:
The truck now feels:

  • Predictable
  • Stable
  • Easy to drive
  • Comfortable at speed

The all-wheel-drive setup completely changes the truck’s behavior compared to the original rear-drive configuration.

Instead of feeling agricultural and underpowered, it now behaves like a properly modernized G-Wagen.

What’s Left to Finish?

The build is still being refined with:

  • Additional tuning
  • Suspension finishing
  • Interior cleanup
  • Sheet metal finishing
  • Shift map optimization

But the difficult part is already complete.

The truck:

  • Starts
  • Runs
  • Drives
  • Shifts
  • Brakes
  • Handles power properly

And that’s an enormous accomplishment for a project this custom.

The Future of Wolf Builds

This EMC Wolf build answers a question many enthusiasts have wondered for years:

“What if the Wolf actually had enough power?”

Now we know.

With:

  • Nearly 400 horsepower
  • AMG V8 sound
  • 5-speed automatic
  • Full-time AWD
  • Modern drivability

This may be one of the coolest Wolf conversions currently on the road.
