How to Use Your G-Wagon Command Upgrade (CarPlay/AA)

How to Use Your G-Wagon Command Upgrade (Wireless CarPlay + Android Auto)

So you just took delivery of your G-Wagon with a COMAND/Command upgrade—now what?

This quick guide shows you how to:

  • Pair your phone correctly

  • Make sure audio is set up the right way (this matters for sound quality)

  • Launch Wireless Apple CarPlay or Wireless Android Auto

  • Fix the most common issue: muffled sound / echo from using AUX instead of Bluetooth audio

What This System Actually Does (In Plain English)

Think of the upgrade screen as a visual extension of your phone.

Your phone still handles the heavy lifting (music, calls, maps, voice assistant), while the truck’s factory system stays in the loop so everything:

  • sounds correct through the factory amp

  • keeps steering wheel controls working

  • displays HVAC info and other vehicle data properly

Step-by-Step Setup

Step 1: Start the truck and go to the main screen

When you first boot up, you’ll land on the upgrade’s home screen.

Step 2: Pair your phone via Bluetooth (Upgrade Screen)

  • Tap Bluetooth

  • Pair your phone (if it isn’t already paired)

  • Confirm it connects

This helps the screen “talk” to your phone and enables CarPlay/Android Auto.

Step 3: Switch to OEM Car Info (Factory COMAND)

Next, go to:

  • OEM Car Info (this opens the factory COMAND system running underneath)

This is important because the factory system is what the upgrade integrates with in the background.

Step 4: Set audio to Bluetooth Audio (Not AUX)

This is the big one.

Inside the factory COMAND menus, make sure your audio source is:

Bluetooth Audio
Auxiliary (AUX)

Why it matters: AUX often causes:

  • muffled audio

  • bass loss

  • odd EQ behavior

  • echo / “hollow” sound

Quick check

  • Go to Bluetooth Audio

  • Open Device List

  • Confirm your phone is connected

Once this is correct, the truck is effectively “talking” directly to your phone for sound—while the upgrade screen is controlling the interface.

Step 5: Launch CarPlay or Android Auto

Now go back to the upgrade screen (tap the screen to exit OEM info).

Then:

  • Tap CarPlay (iPhone) or Android Auto (Android)

Once connected, you should automatically get:

  • Maps

  • Music

  • Calls

  • Voice controls (Siri/Google)

  • Steering wheel integration

You may also see HVAC controls show up on-screen, depending on the vehicle and integration.

If CarPlay/Android Auto Won’t Launch: Turn the Right Options On

If you hit CarPlay/Android Auto and nothing happens, check the system settings:

  • Go to Setup

  • Make sure CarPlay and/or Android Auto are toggled ON

  • Turn OFF the other mirroring modes you aren’t using (examples mentioned: Autolink / HiCar / AirPlay-type options)

Some units won’t allow everything to be enabled at once—so turning on the correct two options is the fix.

The Most Common “Bad Sound” Fix (Echo / Muddy Audio)

If your system functions but sounds wrong, do this:

  1. Go back into OEM Car Info

  2. Confirm you’re on Bluetooth Audio, not AUX

  3. Reconnect your phone if needed

Key concept:

  • You’re not trying to play music through the AUX path

  • You’re using the upgrade to control the phone, while the truck’s Bluetooth audio handles sound cleanly through the factory amp

When to Reach Out

These systems can feel a little complicated the first time, but once it’s set up it’s straightforward.

If you’re stuck:

  • pairing keeps failing

  • CarPlay/Android Auto won’t launch

  • sound quality is off even on Bluetooth audio

Reach out and we can walk you through the menu path quickly.
