How We Wired a G-Wagen for Overland Accessories Using the Garmin PowerSwitch

Wire a G-Wagen for Overland Accessories Using the Garmin PowerSwitch

Looking to cleanly and reliably wire your G-Wagen for lights, onboard air, and other overland accessories? Here’s a look at how we outfitted a 2016 Mercedes-Benz G550 at Alliance Auto Care with a full accessory control system—featuring the Garmin PowerSwitch, scene lighting, and a dedicated auxiliary power port.

This setup is functional, professional, and designed for long-term reliability—no janky wires, no exposed cables, no shortcuts.

Garmin PowerSwitch: The Heart of the Setup

We mounted the Garmin PowerSwitch controller right on the dash using a suction mount. It’s discreet, easy to use, and allows you to wirelessly control every accessory installed on the truck.

Key features:

  • Solid-state relay block hidden inside factory panels

  • Hardwired for durability—no loose wires or surface routing

  • Manual control option available on the unit itself

We ran all wiring through factory troughs, behind panels, and under the carpet, protecting the install from chafing or vibration damage.

Lighting the Way: Front, Side, and Rear Scene Lights

Get your G – Wagen ready for night runs, trail campsites, and recovery situations, thanks to:

  • Two Diode Dynamics LED lights mounted on the bullbar

    • High, low, and backlight modes

  • Side-mounted scene lights

  • Rear-mounted scene lights

  • All color-changing and wirelessly controlled via the Garmin app

We make it easy. Just tap to activate, and the truck lights up completely—no delay, no fuses to mess with.

Power for Overlanding: Onboard Air & Auxiliary Gear

On the side of the passenger seat, we added a dedicated auxiliary power port—wired with an Anderson plug for compatibility with onboard air compressors, portable fridges, or any other 12V accessories.

Everything is clean, plug-and-play, and designed to be functional whether you’re on the trail or at basecamp.

Final Thoughts

The Garmin PowerSwitch is one of our go-to solutions for wiring G-Wagens and other overland rigs. Whether you’re adding lights, air systems, or trail gear, this setup keeps things simple, powerful, and clean.
