Complete G500 Cabriolet Chassis Restoration: From Rusted to Road-Ready

Thinking about restoring your classic G-Wagon?

Let’s take a deep dive into what goes into a full chassis restoration—specifically for a 1998 G500 Cabriolet that came to us in serious need of attention.

This vehicle arrived from Canada showing its age, rust, and wear. But at Alliance Auto Care, we specialize in turning back the clock and delivering showroom-quality results.

Chassis & Frame: Back to the Bare Bones

We started by stripping the truck down to the bare frame. From there, it was sandblasted, rust-repaired with fresh OEM Mercedes parts, and sealed to factory-spec—or better. Every control arm, driveshaft, and suspension component was treated, coated, and brought back to life.

Even the smallest parts like bushings, spacers, hardware, and body mounts were replaced or refinished. Everything is rebuilt to make the truck ride tight and feel brand new.

Ruby-2

Every critical component of the drivetrain was addressed—from a fully disassembled and resealed transfer case to a professionally serviced transmission. The robust M113 engine received new seals, plugs, and belts to ensure long-term performance. Even the often-overlooked power steering gearbox was rebuilt for reliability, delivering a like-new driving experience.

One standout: power steering gearboxes—a common leak issue in G-Wagons—were completely rebuilt for a fraction of the OEM replacement cost.

Suspension, Brakes & Performance

We installed Jack Wagon Overlanding factory-height springs for a better ride, and paired them with Bilstein stainless steel reservoir shocks—a perfect combo for city or short-wheelbase driving.

Every rubber brake line was replaced with braided stainless steel, including diff lock and fuel lines. Safety and durability, top to bottom.

Attention to Every Detail

From heat shielding to fuel sending units, nothing goes untouched. Even the smallest imperfections in the sealant are fixed before the body is reinstalled. It’s a complete restoration—inside and out.

The Value of a Ground-Up Restoration

A full restoration like this—including chassis, suspension, drivetrain, interior, paint, and customization—typically runs around $150,000, give or take depending on options. Considering restored G-Wagons often sell in the $200k+ range, it’s a smart long-term investment—especially when the end result is your dream truck, done your way.
